Sour Cream Yeast Rolls

Sour Cream Yeast Rolls

  • 2-1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour (I ended up using more like 3 1/4 cups flour)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 egg
  1. In a large bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast and salt. In a small saucepan, heat the sour cream, water and 2 tablespoons butter to 120°-130°; add to dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add egg and 1/2 cup flour; beat 2 minutes longer. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  2. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. (I let my Kitchen Aid do the work with a dough hook for 6 minutes) Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  3. Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 12 pieces. Shape each into a ball. Place in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  4. Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.(With mine the tops were brown after 10 minutes. So I just draped foil on top of the rolls and cooked for 10 more minutes. Mine were ready after 20 minutes) Melt remaining butter; brush over rolls. Remove from pan to a wire rack. Yield: 1 dozen.

Homemade rolls, yummy, yummy, but not good on the waist line so I can't eat them but I sure would like to try one of your rolls, Kristin. Have you tried using bread flower instead of all purpose. Wonder how that would taste?

Kevin and I both got such a laugh out Daddy's last comment about the Coconut Creamt Pie...LOL!...how he loved to cook and Grandmother wrote the recipe in his cookbook! hahaha

I am a bread lover! So, I will definitely try this yummy recipe.

I have to say that these rolls were really great, but not as good as I was expecting. Yes, mama, I have used bread flower and yes, I think it is better. But I always go by the recipe the first time around. Candace, I was just going through two OLD recipe books that Grandmother gave me that were hers. There is a recipe that she scribbled in the side that was from Mama Boone. It was for chocolate pound cake. That is the next one that I am going to try. It was cute because she had some instructions in there that started, "Mama said to..."

Ok, that was going to be my first comment...it's FLOUR not flower! :)

Next, those rolls sound yummy, Kristin! We are trying to cut out almost all the bread we eat, but I may just have to try those anyway. Nothing tastes better than homemade bread. Like all the loaves that Mama used to make for us. You are so sweet, Mama!
