Entomology in action!

The kids have been finding many cicada(or locust, as we call'm down South) shells, but no actual cicada bug...just it's shell.
However, today Kaleb found this one while the bug was busy discarding his shell! We all gathered around and watched...it was pretty neat! If you click on the above picture, you can see his bulging eye ball.
Apparently this particular cicada is called a Magicicada and only arrives every 13 or 17 years. Some people(weird people) are known to eat these...as barbecued, broiled, baked, sauteed...yum!
Below is Kaleb's little pet completely removed from his shell and climbing up his shirt. :)

Very cool. Can't say I would like to have it crawling up my shirt though. meradeth would be screaming her had off. She starts crying and screaming if a housefly buzzes past her head. Your brave, Kaleb. I have heard about these bugs and seen them on the nature channel on TV.

When we lived in the red house we had these come out one year and did they make a racket. You kids put them in a bottle and gave a bunch to the two men that came and re-did our kitchen. Kaleb has never been afraid to handle any kinds of critters. Not like his grandmother who is a big chicken.

That is really neat! Kaleb is so cute it's just ridiculous!

Uhh, yeah, and when did we bottle up a bunch of bugs and give them to men who re-did our kitchen? And what in the world did they say when we gave the bugs to them? This is hillarious!

Yes, I remember that, Mama! They wanted them for some reason...I can't recall what for though...

They used them for bait for fishing. And you think I have a bad memory. There are a few things I still recollect.

Kaleb loves bugs....they are very interesting....i like how the yellow flower matches the yellow in the bug....if i had been in the picture my teeth would have been the 3rd match in the picture.
