Our 25 new babies!

Well, we got a call from the post office this evening that our batch of baby chicks had arrived there and needed to be picked up. So, Kevin and his brood of 3 jumped in the car, and off they went to bring home 25 baby laying hens...white Leghorn is their breed. Thankfully, we aren't keeping all 25...just 9. Since baby chicks are cheaper if bought in greater quantity, Steve Cope and Papa went in w/us on this deal and are taking the remaining 16 off our hands.
The kids like petting their soft fuzzy little heads...and there sure is an abundance of chirping going on around here! :)

I think of barnie when I look at them. Pretty in the cradle, homely at the table. I would like to pet one of them. How come one of them is a different color from the rest?

That is Eric's question...why is one of them a different color?

I don't see how you can eat those adorable little things. I would get too attached to them.

The place we buy the birds from throw in for free w/every order a fancy or exotic baby chicken. So, that's the dark one. :)
And, Katie, we don't eat these chickens...they are laying hens who will live out their life in peace.

The people who own the old folks home raise chickens and they had a whole bunch of baby chicks born and Meradeth had so much fun petting them. I couldn't get over how big and ugly their feet were. Do the kids know how to take care of them?

...that's one of Allyson's chores. :)

What happened to your other laying hens? Do they just die after a couple of years or are you just getting more because you want more eggs?

Yes, we want more eggs...and three of our older hens have kicked the bucket.
